Kathryn McKenzie

Kathryn McKenzie is a dynamic leader who seamlessly blends her artistic background with her passion for environmental advocacy. Growing up in the City of Newburgh, Kathryn's early love for nature was rekindled through her father's garden, leading her to pursue a career dedicated to environmental justice. A former dancer, she transitioned into environmentalism and research, where she quickly made her mark.

In 2021, Kathryn joined the Newburgh Environmental Justice Fellowship program, where her commitment to community and the environment deepened. This experience inspired her to pursue a Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) in Environmental Leadership, Justice, and Communications at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Her academic journey has been complemented by hands-on research, notably addressing the City of Newburgh's drinking water issues.

In 2023, Kathryn was honored as one of the Open Space Institute's Barnabas McHenry Fellows. She utilized this opportunity to create "Newburgh's Watershed: A Visual Journey," a story map and timeline that sheds light on Newburgh's PFAS crisis.

Kathryn's leadership extends beyond her academic and research endeavors. She currently serves as Chair of the Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy Board of Directors, where she works to enhance the city's green spaces. Additionally, she contributes to the arts as Secretary for the City of Newburgh Arts and Cultural Commission. Kathryn holds a B.A. in Dance from Hunter College and continues to perform with NK&D / a movement company, demonstrating her continued commitment to both her artistic and environmental passions.
